OMG !!! MARWARI

OH MY GOODNESS! As I often do, I made the mistake of being lured into the Hermes store whilst on my way to Christmas shop at Tiffany. The folks leaving Hermes with their big orange bags just looked so festive, it was hard not to join in the holiday fun. I thought I would drool over the Kelly's and the occasional Birkin, but what caught my eye on this vist was a gorgeous Marwari bag.

When I tried it on my shoulder, I was instantly bewitched. Like all Hermes leathers, you have to feel them to understand their allure. This bag was in taurrillon clemence leather which is particularly, buttery and smooshy. And then to top it off, it was in etoupe which is a gorgeous neutral that looks fabulous with almost eveything in your wardrobe. Did I mention the beautiful vache hunter dark brown leather shoulder strap and silver and palladium buckle closure. The combo is yummy! The bag opens at the top and keeps all your belongings within easy reach. The exterior pocket is great to keep smaller items close at hand, rather than losing them at the bottom of the bag. Extremely roomy, it would make an excellent travel bag and I hope to be traveling to all kinds of amazing destinations with the Marwari soon! An awesome everyday bag and for Hermes, well price at, dare I say, a mere $3100.

"You are supposed to collect art, not handbags"

We love and appreciate art and even collect it ourselves. Why is it that art or jewelry is considered collectible while a handbag is deemed, disposable? Although spending $8,000 and upward on a Hermes handbag may sound insane to many, it’s the ultimate purchase for an Hermès brand loyalist. Give us a moment to make a case for the coveted, collectible Hermes Handbag.

When other luxury brands are reaching to a bigger mass market, Hermès has made a very specific decision not to do that. Hermes bags are distributed worldwide to Hermès boutiques on intentionally unpredictable schedules and in even fewer reliable quantities, creating a sense of scarcity and exclusivity around the product. Supply vs. demand, but that is only part of the story.

Hermes is a luxury leather good that is made the old fashioned way. Each handbag is handmade by a single craftsman from start to finish, handled only by that craftsman until it is turned over for inspection. Depending on the size of the bag and the leather used, a single bag can take anywhere from 18-30 hours to craft. An average workshop will produce only five handbags a week.

The heirloom quality and calssic styling is such that these bags are meant to be enjoyed and handed down from generation to generation, much as one would a cherished piece of jewelry.

Next Up...The Kelly Mystique

It is probably the most famous handbag in the world. Designed by Robert Dumas in the 1930s, the Kelly was unlike any other bag. It was first called sac à courroie pour dames, meaning bag with straps for ladies. The bag was not an immediate best seller, but nonetheless, remained in the Hermes collection. It wasn’t until 1956 that the bag, with the help of a princess and a pregnancy, was propelled toward its iconic stature.

It seemed that no one could get enough Grace Kelly. An award winning film and stage actress, Grace Kelly was to many a shining example of all that was 1950’s Hollywood glamour. Talented, poised, graceful and breathtakingly beautiful, Grace Kelly enchanted audiences and individuals everywhere. In 1956, news of Grace Kelly’s engagement to Prince Rainier III of Monaco was a sensation.possible end to Kelly's . The press heralded the union as the "The Wedding of the Century."

Not long after the wedding, the newly married Princess, not yet wishing to announce her pregnancy to the world, used one of her two favorite Hermes bags to shield her pregnancy from the prying eyes of the press. Photographs of her covering her stomach bulge with her Hermès handbag were splashed all over the world and made it onto the cover of Life magazine! Such was Kelly’s influence at the time that from henceforth, her essential accessory became known as the “Kelly” bag. It was renamed the Kelly by fashionistas, but only officially renamed 21 years later and has enjoyed an iconic status ever since.
